Jack O' Lantern

Every October 31 night, Halloween is celebrated all over the world. But, where does the custom of carving pumpkins come from? Let's find out the legend of Stingy Jack, Jack O' Lantern.

Video Transcript
"Come, travel back in time with me as we explore the brief history of Halloween. One of the biggest symbols of Halloween, the jack-o-lantern, is associated with Irish tradition. This comes from the Irish belief, a long ago time, there was a rascal of a fellow named Jack who had the audacity to trick the very devil himself. It is said that Jack played a trick on the devil by enticing him up into a tree, then carving the sign of the cross in the tree so that the devil could not get down. In exchange for removing the sign the devil had to promise not to come after Jack's soul. Well, the devil kept his promise, but it did not prevent Jack from eventually dying. Because Jack had been a stingy miserly drunkard in his life he was not admitted into heaven. Desperate for a place to rest his soul, Jack appealed to the devil to let him reside in Hell. But, because Jack had tricked the devil, the devil would not let Jack into Hell. Instead, Jack was condemned to run the earth forever, searching for an eternal resting place. The devil gave Jack a candle, which Jack put into the turnip he was eating. From that day on he has roamed the earth, with his lantern, looking for that place to rest. And, that is how we got the modern day Jack-O-Lantern."

Less Tobacco Smoke Means Fewer Heart Attacks
"Studies have shown that tobacco smoke is not just deadly for tobacco users. Those who breathe in smoke from other people's cigarettes also have an increased risk for heart attacks. A new study shows that smoking bans have significant health benefits for everyone."

I hope this will be of any help.

Biblioburro / Library on a Donkey

"A Child that we educate today is a child to whom we are teaching rights, duties and commitments. A child who knows his rights, his duties and commitments is a child informed to say "no" to war."

This is the amazing story of Luis Humberto Soriano Bohorquez, a teacher who created the " Biblioburro", or "Library Donkey", in an effort to bring books and the gift of education to the children in his community of La Gloria, Colombia.

And this is the result of his effort with the help of people of goodwill:

Martha's Vineyard

This year we have a new friend: Erin, our Auxiliary of Conversation. As she talked to us about her hometown, Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard island, I think it is a good idea to know a little more about this place. So,  if you go to this link you will be able to see the place on Google Earth and here is a video of  Oak Bluffs with the houses and the places she has shown us.

By the way, did you know that Jaws was filmed on the Island? Here's a video with various locations used in the movie.
